Still Life Paintings

While still life paintings remain one of the most hallowed works of art, the proliferation of postcards and reproductions lends to the stigma that the art form is dated and a feels a little stuffy. In a brilliant -- or sacrilegious -- piece simply titled "Still Life," artistScott Garner reexamines the field and adds a defiantly modern twist to the genre, animating the normally unmoving subject matter. Garner created an interactive still life that reacts to the movement of the frame. "Still Life" appears to be just another picture of fruit and accompanying glassware, but it's actually a complex video installation, one that has been brewing in Garner's mind for quite some time. The artist states on his website, "Years ago I had the idea of a still life painting that wasn’t so still, but could never quite wrap my head around how to build it." Using a combination of cutting-edge technologies such as Unity 3D, spatial sensors and cameras, Garner synchronized all of the objects in the frame to ensure cohesive realistic motion. What is social proof? As defined by Wikipedia , social proof is “a psychological phenomenon where people assume the actions of others reflect correct behavior for a given situation.” To put it in layman’s terms, social proof is the positive influence created when people find out others are doing something – now, suddenly, everyone else wants to do that something too. Social proof can be very powerful, so if you want to harness that power and use it to your business’s advantage, here are a few key ways to do so. 
Approval from an Expert 
Also known as “expert social proof,” a business that’s recommended by a credible blogger, critic, magazine, etc. can see a dramatic increase in traffic and sales. For example, let’s say a magazine in your niche mentions your business in a positive light. If they’re a credible (i.e., popular) magazine, you can see a real impact on not only your website traffic levels, but your potential sales as well. 
Celebrity Endorsements 
You’ve seen commercials with celebrity endorsements, but few internet startups have done this. The few that have, however, have met with real results. Take ShoeDazzle, for example. If you truly want to harness the power of social proof, build a dedicated fan base on various social media accounts for your business. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to draw attention to your brand and the products you offer, and studies have shown that people are more likely to purchase something based on a friend’s recommendation than not. With that being said, take the time to build your followers on the social media accounts you have. This not only gains exposure for your brand, but also allows your current followers to attract even more followers (i.e., potential customers) to your business. Some of these methods may not be realistic for your business, but you can start to employ at least one of them to increase your social proof. It takes dedication and active engagement with your followers, but once you start to build a little bit of social proof, you’ll see that it grows faster and faster over time.

Papa, please forgive me if I’m using English in this email. There’s one friend that I also want him to read this^_^ as the thing that I want to share to you today, might related to things I want to share to him First of all, arigatou for the poem that you’ve sent me^^; and also arigatou for Mba Rita’s email too. Both really made me cry in the morning T__T I know you’ve read my old articles in my old computer back home, as you might realized that I’m so living in the past’s shadow at that time. And I could see how thankful you’re when you’ve read my recent articles. Somehow I did, Alhamdulillah found the answer. And I pray I’ll never walk out from this path again. Yes I will always try to move forward^^, forgive my past, Alhamdulillah for today I live, and also pray for the better future. I heard about your crash computer, how’s about the articles and the scenarios that Papa have made? T_T I hope you have back-up file. o__o I’ve lost a lot of my articles when my computer crashed. That’s why, now I always have a back-up cd of files per semester=3 Don’t forget, a writer, always remember to back-up files=D hehehehe… as I’ve lost my hundred-pages novel files in my early age in writingT_T huhuhuhu~ Papa, yesterday I went to iftar (buka puasa) in the new masjid in Beppu. I guess that’s the first time I really come to masjid in Beppu, as I never went to the old mushola that we’ve have in different place before. I went there with my kohai. She’s kinda surprised to accept the fact I almost never been to such an occasion. The masjid (mosque) is like a ruko building^^ It kinda weird as first time I entered coz I couldn’t see it as a masjid, but when I reached the 3rd floor^^ I know, I finally find a place. It kinda far from from my apato=D but ii~. I’m so thankful there such masjid now in Beppu ^^ ~ I’ll walk with happiness to be in that place… I then remembered my highschool’s masjid, and my university’s masjid, and how active I’ve been that time. And I do remember one hadith saying that we should take our self close to masjid, as masjid is place to remember Allah. Then I realized this is also my way of “cure” and maintain my faith. I remembered most of my mentally break-down was happened when I’m far for muslim-friends, or I’ll say, jamaah. Far from masjid. I was so simple when I was highschool and during my early 20s. But yet a beautiful soul to remember. And I really want to be in that condition again, with the new me and my new point of view. I was so live for Allah. And it kinda make my heart tremble in fear when I realized, I’ve turned away quite far along this way. Yeah, I became so arrogant and forgot about the reason of us being here in earth. Astaghfirullah… Alhamdulillah for Allah still remind my mistake now.. Seeing masjid yesterday, couldn’t make me stop of feeling thankful that I’m here now. To see different moslem around the world, feel the unique ukhuwah that I’ve never seen before. Yeah, yesterday was my first day of living as a ‘new’ me, but yet-,+ I’m still shy and almost never saying a thing at that evening...T_T yadaaa na, watashi~~. Usually I need to meet people regularly more than 1 month to be able to speak with themT_T I hope with Qur’an class that we’ll have, I’ll manage to be more active and cheerful:D as usually almost everyone who knows me will say, “I never thought before that you’re so funny when I first met you”. Yea, I know that’s my weaknessT_T… Come to think about it, I still have 2 years, Alhamdulillah^_^ … There’s so many things happened in this last 2 years, maybe some would say, I wasted my time. But I do realized, without that “time” I won’t be here in this position now. Astaghfirullah for all my mistakes back then, and Alhamdulillah for Allah made me through it and made me see the reason why it’s happened. InsyaAllah^_^ Things that I also remember during these times were, ‘I forgot to take Islam as my life goal’. I’m thinking about being an ARTist one day, but yet I forgot there’s no goal for Islam..T_T ararara… I remember the surah which saying that we live here, because of Allah want us to be leader (khalifah) here in earth. Be a khalifah in specific things that we could do. For example, teach, write, or make art that could make people remember Allah. I realized that the time I’ll birth my babies also means birth a khalifah in this earth. And I then realized I’m soooooo live in a box. All I could think before just, “keep doing art-things”, “married”, “have a lot of kids”,”happily ever after”. Full stop. “The best years in my life, is the time when I did something that I could do and I really like to do (like drawing, writing, and making things, etc) for Allah only…” Then I found my answer again^^… “I want to do something for Islam, with my two small hands” Of course, I will still earn rizki, and do the “not related to Islam” kind of job… ^^ but I also promise myself to do something for Islam, as our main purpose living. As there will be a day, when we’ll be asked, “What have you done during your time in earth?” I want to answer it well that time T_T insyaAllah… insyaAllah… ^^ These are things that I found these couple days. I hope everyone that read it could be inspired of these things that inspired me… I also want to thank for all the tausiyah that Papa always sent me. And Mba Rita, Mba Linda, Piah… recently I realized that a true friends, is the one who could make us remember Allah. And it’s also our duty to remind other friend who forget. ^^ Please don’t be tired to remind me always when I’m weak… And I hope I will always have the strength and the smile to remind you, to be strong… always^^ Aamiin^^ Uhibbuka fii Illah…

Formula For Success

After reading my daughter Meilina’s post about Life Strategies yesterday, I remember one of Dr. Phil’s Books especially about “Formula For Success” as I have quoted below. 
Being real with yourself is hard, but it needs to be done if you're going to live authentically. Be honest. Know your patterns. Recognize your typical excuses, rationalizations and justifications for failure. Look ahead and see which excuses you are most likely going to rely on and write them down in a story. 

The winners in life know the rules of the game and have a plan. Whether you want to begin a new career, shed pounds or find the love of your life, consider these characteristics which Dr. Phil says are common to people who succeed. 
Have a vision. 
Champions get what they want because they know what they want. They have a vision that keeps them motivated and efficiently on track. They see it, feel it, and experience it in their minds and hearts. What is success for you? You won't get there without knowing what it feels and looks like. 
Make a strategy. 
People who consistently win have a clear and thoughtful strategy. They know what they need to do and when they need to do it. They write it down so they stay on course and avoid any alternative that does not get them closer to the finish line. 
Find a passion. 
Are you excited to get up in the morning? People with a passion are, and they're energized about what they are doing. You need to live and breathe what it is that you want, and be passionately invested in both the journey and the goal. 
Live the truth. 
People who consistently win have no room in their lives for denial, fantasy or fiction. They are self-critical rather than self-deluding, and they hold themselves to high but realistic standards. They deal with the truth, since they recognize that nothing else will make their vision obtainable. 
Be flexible. 
Life is not a success-only journey. Even the best-laid plans sometimes must be altered and changed. Be open to input and consider any potentially viable alternative. Be willing to be wrong and be willing to start over. 
Take risks. 
People who consistently win are willing to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. Be willing to plunge into the unknown if necessary, and leave behind the safe, unchallenging, and familiar existence in order to have more. 
Create a strong nucleus. 
Surround yourself with a group of people who want you to succeed. They will move with you toward your goal. Choose and bond with people who have skills, talents and abilities that you do not. Winners give and receive by being part of other people's nuclear groups. 
Take action. 
Do it! People who succeed don't just sit and think about what they want to do. They take meaningful, purposeful, directional action consistently and persistently. Every step they take puts them toward the outcome they're looking for. 
Set priorities. 
People who are consistent winners manage their challenges in hierarchical fashion. They commit to managing their time in such a way that does not allow them to keep grinding along on priority number two or three if priority number one needs their attention. 
Take care of yourself. 
People who consistently win are consciously committed to self-management. They are the most important resource they have in achieving their goals. They actively manage their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Cambodia Today

After reading the description of the building and it's history in Cambodia on my previous post, some friends want to know more about on the country today, especially after Pol Pot's regime . 
In rural Cambodia today, agriculture accounts for 90% of the gross domestic product or income; representing the traditional mainstay of the Cambodian economy. However, rice has always been the principle commodity. As a matter-of- fact, rice is a vital economic factor in Cambodia’s agrarian society. Secondary crops that contribute to Cambodia’s economy is maize, cassava, sweet potatoes, soy beans, sesame seeds, ground nuts, dry beans, and rubber. Second to rice, the primary commodity is the commercial crop, rubber. Rubber is one of the country’s few sources of foreign exchange. The exploration of rubber began in the mid 1980’s. The Soviet Union was and continues to be a major customer. Other commercial crops after that,included sugar cane, cotton, and tobacco. The Cambodians or Khmers also raised livestock as an essential part of their economic life. For example, water buffalo and ox en played a crucial role in the preparation of rice fields. Cambodians generally ate freshwater fish as it provided a major source of protein. 
Unfortunately, as a result of the Khmer Rouge regime rule that occurred during the 1970s, many residents were forced to move out of the cities. Therefore, most of the population resides in the rural areas. Only about 10% of the citizens of Cambodia live in urban areas. During the Khmer Rouge period, families were separated and killed. The period also dictated the overall dynamics of the country. For Cambodians that reside in the rural lands, poverty and farming is the only life they know. Although, poverty also exists in the urban lands, there is immense opportunity for economic growth and power.

The Royal Palace was one of my favorite buildings. Originally, when King Noromdom first came to Phnom Penh from his previous capital Udong, he lived in a small, simple building made of wood and bamboo. Even though it might have been romantic, by French standards it was hardly a palace for a great lord. That is why, in 1865, they start to build the palace that we can see today. Its style is traditional Khmer, but the architect used modern materials and contemporary methods to build it. In this way, it brought together the old and the new. At the time that King Norodom (1860-1904) signed the Treaty of Protection with France in 1863, the capital of Cambodia resided at Oudong, about 45 kilometers northeast of Phnom Penh. Earlier in 1863 a temporary wooden Palace was constructed a bit north of the current Palace site in Phnom Penh. The first Royal Palace to be built at the present location was designed by architect Neak Okhna Tepnimith Mak and constructed by the French Protectorate in 1866. That same year, King Norodom moved the Royal court from Oudong to the new Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and the city became the official capital of Cambodia the following year. Over the next decade several buildings and houses were added, many of which have since been demolished and replaced, including an early Chanchhaya Pavilion and Throne Hall (1870). The Royal court was installed permanently at the new Royal Palace in 1871 and the walls surrounding the grounds were raised in 1873. Many of the buildings of the Royal Palace, particularly of this period, were constructed using traditional Khmer architectural and artistic style but also incorporating significant European features and design as well. One of the most unique surviving structures from this period is the Napoleon Pavilion which was a gift from France in 1876. King Sisowath (1904-1927) made several major contributions to the current Royal Palace, adding the Phochani Hall in 1907 (inaugurated in 1912), and from 1913-1919 demolishing several old buildings, and replacing and expanding the old Chanchhaya Pavilion and the Throne Hall with the current structures. These buildings employ traditional Khmer artistic style and Angkorian inspired design, particularly in the Throne Hall, though some European elements remain. The next major construction came in the 1930s under King Monivong with the addition of the Royal Chapel, Vihear Suor (1930), and the demolition and replacement of the old Royal residence with the Khemarin Palace (1931), which serves as the Royal residence to this day. The only other significant additions since have been the 1956 addition of the Villa Kantha Bopha to accommodate foreign guests and the 1953 construction of the Damnak Chan originally installed to house the High Council of the Throne. Today the Royal Palace has had some modifications to its buildings; some have also been demolished completely. The Throne Hall there today is actually not the original one King Norodom would have used when the palace was first built. The Silver Pagoda has undergone a tremendous face-lift with its tiles replaced and buildings given new paint. It has become a popular tourist attraction in Phnom Penh. Visitors are able to wander around the Silver Pagoda compound and the central compound containing the Throne Hall, however, they may not enter the Khemarin Palace compound. The Khemarin Palace compound is where Norodom Sihamoni, the present King of Cambodia currently resides.
